Permit-Aware

Navigation for Mobile Cranes

Stop wasting time on manual route planning - try CraneNav

An innovative navigation solution for mobile devices

Explore the advanced features that set CraneNav’s “Permit-Aware” navigation solution apart from traditional methods. CraneNav is designed for overweight permits for mobile cranes, with a permit duration of one or more years. Permit data is intelligently transposed from tabular data to maps, enabling a truly dynamic routing solution.

We are currently in development and conducting trials in Auckland, New Zealand, with a planned launch in November 2025. Shortly thereafter, we intend to expand service across New Zealand.

Our goal is to extend CraneNav to other regions where roading authorities provide annual digital overweight permits with bridge condition data (GPS coordinates, name, condition, speed restrictions, etc.). If this applies in your state or country, we invite you to register an expression of interest. Your input will help us prioritise where to offer the service next.

Save time on route planning

CraneNav takes the heavy lifting out of route planning.

Pre-trip planner

Use the Heavy Haul route overlay to double check your route against approved roads.

Our Journey

CraneNav was born from a vision to revolutionize crane navigation through a “Permit-Aware” solution. Our platform converts digital permits into real-time navigation data, empowering crane operators with unmatched safety and compliance. We are committed to shaping the future of crane operations with innovative IT solutions.

Founder Dave McLeod, whose two sons work in the mobile crane sector, saw firsthand how pre-trip planning is a major pain point — ensuring compliance while staying within permit conditions. CraneNav was created to solve this challenge.

Features

Google Maps for mobile cranes
If you are familiar with Google Maps or Waze, you can use CraneNav. The key difference is that CraneNav is designed specifically for mobile crane operations: it runs in “Truck” mode, recognises the type of crane you are driving, and is aware of all bridges (and their conditions) listed in your permit.
Your company fleet are accessible in the app
CraneNav includes a dropdown list of your company’s fleet. The last crane you select is “sticky” — CraneNav remembers your previous choice, which is especially handy if you drive the same crane most days. Routes are automatically tailored to the permit requirements of the crane you’ve selected.
GPS tracking will auto-fill your origin

CraneNav automatically fills in your origin — simply choose your destination, wait for the route calculation, and press Start.

Behind the scenes, CraneNav uses a multi-pass system:

  1. Calculate the route, just as Google Maps or Waze would.

  2. Retrieve all bridge coordinates within the route’s bounding box.

  3. Recalculate the route to avoid any “Do Not Cross” bridges.
